Glitter on a turd
To me, today's marketing seems a bit lost. In one way it's an incredibly powerful force, guiding and motivating larger society towards who they should become and what they should aspire. In other ways, it's applying any found rhetoric that captures the zeitgeist of that moment and slapping it on a product regardless of what that product is. Often with minimal intellectual reasoning or purpose.
During my brief experience in North American Marketing Communications I discovered that there was often a simple underlying message in every campaign, in disregard to the product it was promoting. Buy this to be happier, become more joyful, the best version of yourself, or even worse; so you can take a selfie with it. From my perspective, this became somewhat of an undignified gesture no different from smearing glitter on a turd.
